12 NOVEMBER | NEW DELHI –In collaboration with the International Business Leaders Forum, the Business & Community Foundation and the United Nations Foundation, PMNCH organized a special briefing focusing on the role of the private sector as a partner in helping deliver the Global Strategy on Women’s & Children’s Health. The Global Strategy is a bold effort led by the UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon through which all stakeholders, including business, can work together to save the lives of millions. The event was sponsored by Intel Corporation.
The briefing took place on the eve of “From Pledges to Action: A Partners’ Forum on Women’s & Children’s Health” with the intention to distil key messages that will be included in the outcomes of the Partners’ Forum.
The meeting gathered over 60 participants from various industries including ICT, media, pharmaceutical, diagnostic, medical equipment, healthcare delivery, consumer goods, food & beverage along with government leaders, NGOs, academics, healthcare practitioners, foundations, MNCH experts.
The meeting began by giving a background on both the Global Strategy and opportunities for all sectors to engage. A framework for collaborative private sector engagement in improving MNCH was presented, which included strategies to engage through core business, philanthropy and CSR as well as public advocacy and policy dialogue.
There was a regional focus on the state of MNCH in South Asia and what can be done to accelerate progress for improved health. Given that Asia and the Pacific have the largest share of the world’s population, the importance of progress in the region to achieving the Global Strategy was stressed.
Multi-sector collaboration is essential in order to achieve the maternal, newborn & child health Millennium Development Goals. Through an interactive discussion, the briefing emphasized not only the substantial contribution that the private sector can make to MNCH, but also highlighted various examples of South-Asian businesses that have already successfully engaged in MNCH and delivered significant results.
