IBERDROLA has won the first Climate Leadership award in the Industry category from the Association of Climate Officers in the United States, which acknowledges the private companies, public bodies and NGOs with the best climate change strategies.
The award was collected by Agustín Delgado, the company's Director of Innovation, Environment and Quality and by Ted Shreve, Director of EHS Compliance at IBERDROLA U.S.A., at an event held at the University of Maryland (Washington).
The company was the only Spanish group in the running for this award and was chosen over five other finalists: the Bonneville Environmental Foundation, CB Richard Ellis, the Chicago Department of the Environment, the Gold Standard Foundation and the Sacramento Municipal Utility District.
IBERDROLA has been highlighted by the organisation for making its climate change policy one of the basic pillars in its organisation and in the activity of all of its business divisions and subsidiaries worldwide.
This award also acknowledges the Group's effort in heightening awareness among its stakeholders (customers, employees, investors, suppliers, etc.) about the risks derived from climate change and helping them to identify sustainable solutions.
The Association of Climate Officers was created in 2009 with the following aims: to provide a forum for the exchange and enhancement of best practices and industry standards on combating climate change, to promote innovation in this field and to raise awareness of this problem among companies, public bodies and NGOs.
This award is further proof of IBERDROLA 's commitment to bringing down CO2 emissions and to sustainable development, which has already won the company other acknowledgements this year, such as its inclusion in the new Carbon Performance Leadership Index (CLPI) and in the Global 100 Most Sustainable Corporations in the World.
In this regard, the Spanish Association for Standardisation and Certification (AENOR) has certified the company's greenhouse gas emissions inventory, which includes all of its operations in Spain, the United Kingdom, the United States and Latin America. The company is the first Spanish company and one of a pioneering few worldwide to obtain this certification.
With a view to promoting its climate change strategy in society, IBERDROLA has launched a website that explains the Group's commitment to bringing down CO2 emissions, provides information on the various initiatives that it has organised with this objective in mind and includes a tool to help users calculate their carbon footprint.
43% drop in CO2 emissions in Spain
Emissions recorded by IBERDROLA at the close of the third quarter of the year in Spain stood at 96 grams of CO2 per kilowatt hour, which represents a 43% drop compared to the same period in the previous year, when total emissions of 168 grams of CO2 were recorded.
The group has also closed the first nine months of the year with average worldwide emissions of 244 grams of CO2 per kilowatt hour, a 13% drop on the same period in 2009, when the figure was 279 grams per kilowatt hour.
Thanks to IBERDROLA's commitment to cleaner generation technologies, almost 48% of its total output in 2010 was free from CO2 emissions, a figure that in the case of Spain has risen to 80%.
