Pennsylvania glass company fined for violations including high asbestos levels
The owner of a Pennsylvania glass company is being investigated for environmental law violations, including elevated asbestos levels.
According to the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review, District Judge Joe DeMarchis issued a warrant on October 5, allowing the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) to enter the Jeannette Glass site, run by owner Abe Zion and look for traces of the highly toxic fiber in the glass facility.
Regulators found many materials in the building, including galbestos, an asbestos-protected metal, and transite, a cement and asbestos mixture most often used in wall construction. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration has issued several reports showing that carcinogens can become airborne when transite splinters.
The DEP made several attempts to contact Zion and enter the building, but after those attempts failed, the warrant was put in place and sent to both Zion and his attorney.
Asbestos is known to be a cause of mesothelioma, a rare form of cancer that currently has no known cure.
