Consonus Debunks Green Data Center Myth With Impressive PUE Rating For 15-Year-Old Facility
Consonus Technologies, a green data center hosting provider, has received a Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE) rating of 1.35 for its 15-year-old West Data Center facility -- exceeding industry standards by as much as 0.85 points.
CARY, NORTH CAROLINA -- Consonus Technologies, Inc. recently announced the latest Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE) score for their West Data Center in Salt Lake City, Utah. The 15-year-old facility achieved an impressive PUE rating -- a product of energy efficiency efforts implemented by Consonus over the past year. The industry average is typically between 2.0 and 2.2; Consonus' West Data Center PUE score was considerably lower at 1.35.
Developed by The Green Grid, a global consortium dedicated to advancing energy efficiency in data centers and business computing ecosystems, PUE is a measure of how efficiently a computer data center uses its power, specifically, the total load required to operate the IT systems plus support systems such as power distribution, humidification, and cooling. The lower the PUE level, the more energy efficient the data center.
"The fact that we have significantly improved the PUE score of an existing facility debunks a common myth shared by many -- that these scores are only achievable in new facilities," said Daniel Milburn, senior vice president and chief operating officer of hosting and infrastructure services for Consonus. "We made strategic changes and added cost-effective green technologies to provide a data center that is not only state-of-the-art, but one that now out performs many efficiency benchmarks."
These energy efficiency initiatives are a part of company-wide efforts that focus on the usage of green technologies to improve data center power consumption while reducing the company's carbon footprint. Recently, Consonus was awarded the Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA's) ENERGY STAR(R) for their South Data Center, also located in Salt Lake City, Utah. This designation marks the first time a commercial data center has achieved this rating and puts Consonus in the top quartile for energy efficiency among data center peers.
"This past year we have completed over 40 initiatives to improve data center energy efficiency. This score is proof that we were successful in our efforts to reduce power consumption," said Consonus Chief Information Officer, Brent Wall.
Some of the energy efficiency improvements made to the West Data Center include:
• New evaporative cooling tower
• Cold Aisle Containment
• Ducted Return Systems
• High Efficiency Floor Tiles
• Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) Modeling and Analysis
• In addition, further improvements to multiple Consonus data centers are slated to take place in the coming year.
