Pennsylvania Asbestos Notice–Pittsburgh career center undergoes asbestos removal
For the first time in its history, Pittsburgh’s A.W. Beattie Career Center is almost like new—having undergone a major renovation, a first since it was originally constructed in 1965.
The structure was entirely gutted, and large amounts of the toxic substance asbestos were cleaned from the building prior to the new beginning of the new work. In an effort to make the Career Center a safer environment for students and staff, the school has ensured the removal of all asbestos and other dangerous materials, as well as installed ‘green’ upgrades to the building. These upgrades reduce energy use and water consumption.
The combination of the asbestos abatement and ‘green’ upgrades made the school a Certified Silver LEED building, meaning it now qualifies for state and local government incentives.
The inhalation of high levels of asbestos fibers can cause lung cancer and pleural mesothelioma, a rare cancer of the lining of the chest and the abdominal cavity caused almost exclusively by asbestos exposure. In most cases, a patient suffering from mesothelioma is not expected to live for longer than 24 months after diagnosis.
