New self-help book seeks to inform, empower male victims of spousal abuse
LANGLEY, British Columbia (MMD Newswire) September 20, 2010 -- Decent Shame: Facing the Assaults on Our Husbands by John Hurst discusses the circumstances and potential outcomes of spousal abuse directed at men.
According to Hurst, the tragic plight of battered husbands is often overlooked because of media messages that place the blame for spousal assault solely on men. Arguing that male victimhood is a serious and ongoing problem, he offers tips for staying safe in one's home, advises victims to start a paper trail to document instances of abuse and argues for the creation of emergency shelters for male spousal assault victims.
"I saw the ugly effects of husband battery, first as a very young court reporter and next, as a very young husband who was himself beaten," Hurst says. "Further experience in journalism and what I feel is today's wave of anti-male communication convinced me of the need for this book."
Intended to serve as a resource for men and build awareness among female readers, the book blends personal recollections with legal and sociological research to address the issue. Particular emphasis is placed on the concept of shame and self-recrimination in abusive relationships that victimize men. Hurst argues for greater public awareness and acceptance of the realities of abuse and urges readers who may be suffering in an abusive relationship to overcome feelings of shame and seek help.
