New nonfiction book dissects chain reaction of family-bred emotions
CORDOVA, Tenn. (MMD Newswire) September 20, 2010 -- Caterpillars Chrysalis to Butterflies: Humans Change Through Family Process by Sylvia Landau and Carolyn Gibson seeks to introduce the basics of the Bowen Family Systems Theory, a concept created by Dr. Murray Bowen, which analyzes how familial behavior patterns are passed down to generations and into various environments. "For example, what is natural for a 'middle-born peacemaker,' who predictably moderates family tension at home, usually is a natural behavioral pattern in the workplace and often in other relationship situations," says Landau.
Landau, a clinical social worker, and Gibson, an educational psychologist, are both students of the Bowen Theory. They aim to share in this handbook their personal and professional discoveries on the predictability of human behavior by using an anonymous, biographical case-study method. The authors hope their findings will make readers realize the discussed unconscious emotional reactions, which can then slow the chaotic situations poisoned by negative relationships in existence today. "This is a timely, important primer on human behavior that recognizes human actions as reactive 'survival' responses - predictable by generational programming - as a way to get objective about what has been," say the authors.
Caterpillars Chrysalis to Butterflies is intended to be understandable and reader-friendly, with chapters such as "The Hand You're Dealt," "Automatic Pilot," "Hitting The Wall," "Dark Night of the Soul" and "Alive At Last."
