New novel speaks out on overcoming domestic violence

The Finger Puppet by Anu Jayanth reveals how one girl finds refuge from an abusive father

HOUSTON (MMD Newswire) August 25, 2010 -- Set in Tiruchirapalli, India, The Finger Puppet by Anu Jayanth tells the story of Tara, who overcomes a childhood speech impediment by talking to her finger puppet friend and alter ego, Yatri.

In The Finger Puppet , Yatri has grand designs for Tara from the start. First, she works on turning Tara against her despotic and violent father, Appa. One way they try to distance themselves from Appa is when they seek to have Appa jailed when they discover he has hidden a stolen temple idol in their attic.

When their mother flees and takes her two younger daughters with her to Gandhigram, they are stripped of their high-class Brahman status. The women must share duties with orphaned children in this self-contained village, where life mirrors the philosophy and principles of Mahatma Gandhi .

Tara finds herself withdrawing and allowing her alter-ego, Yatri, to gradually appropriate Tara's personality. After rushing home to be with her elder sister after an attempted suicide, Tara, now as Yatri, has a memorable conversation with her now ailing father and realizes how much she loves him and wants to help him live.

Tarun Cherian of the Deccan Herald writes, "An interesting protagonist, believable characters, a powerful story, layers of thought ... Add to this a beautifully angular poetic style, and you have an interesting (and dense), thought-provoking (and gawky) debut novel that helps us living in the Tiruchirapallis of life to appreciate it and escape it."

The Finger Puppet is available for sale online at Amazon.com and other channels.
