New memoir exposes wife's life caring for husband with Alzheimer's
GOLD HILL, Ore. (MMD Newswire) September 7, 2010 -- Alzheimer Diary: A Wife's Journal by Michelle Montgomery offers the author's personal account of her late husband's 10-year battle with Alzheimer's disease. "After my husband was diagnosed, a friend suggested I start keeping a journal," says Montgomery. "Two years later, when things started getting tough, I began writing."
Montgomery admits that her writing initially began as an outlet to vent her anger and frustration with her husband's debilitating disease, yet after a year and a half, her writing began to reflect acceptance of her situation. Alzheimer Diary shares Montgomery's shift in emotions as well as her adjustment to a maternal role, as her husband became more childlike. The journal also surrounds Montgomery's escape to memories earlier in their marriage. "Caring for a person afflicted with Alzheimer's can be an intensely taxing emotional experience, as well as a physical one," says Montgomery. "Learning to relate to a loved one with compassion, caring and humor can make the burdens lighter."
Montgomery hopes the words in her journal can comfort others coping with a loved one suffering from Alzheimer's. "Reading this memoir left me feeling like I did while sitting in front of a Monet at the Met in New York: emotionally stunned and grateful to be in the presence of true beauty," writes reviewer Kat Nove. "I laughed and cried along with Michelle as she allowed me into her world - from the time of the diagnosis to the bittersweet end. I highly recommend this memoir. You'll come away from it wanting to seize every moment of every day."
