Historian's new novel tells true story of controversial Civil War nurse

Beyond All Price by Carolyn Poling Schriber follows the adventures of a courageous nurse in the Union army

CORDOVA, Tenn. (MMD Newswire) September 7, 2010 -- Beyond All Price by Carolyn Poling Schriber explores the true-life resiliency of Nelly Chase, a volunteer nurse during America's Civil War. Her patients called her a saint and an angel of mercy, but the regimental chaplain called Nellie Chase an immoral and vain woman not fit to associate with decent people. The real story of this historical figure is meant to emerge in Schriber's new novel, Beyond All Price.

Chase joins the 100th Pennsylvania Regiment to escape an abusive husband. She advances to several other positions with the Union army, finally becoming the head matron at a 600-bed hospital. Her kindness and gentle touch encourage her patients to call her the "Florence Nightingale of the West," but her enemies pursue her even after the war. Through it all, Chase endures hardships and illness, suffers injuries and fights off rumors of her supposed illicit behavior, even as she tries to atone for her questionable past. But she faces one final battle with an enemy even more dangerous than war itself.

Thoroughly researched, Beyond All Price is designed to shed new light on one of the bloodiest periods in American history, as well as to introduce readers to one of the era's most colorful figures.

Beyond All Price is available for sale online at Amazon.com and other channels.
