New York Asbestos News-National Mesothelioma Awareness Day in Rockefeller Plaza
The first ever National Mesothelioma Awareness Day will be held in New York City’s Rockefeller Plaza on September 26th, and aims to spread awareness about the most aggressive and deadly of asbestos-related diseases.
Close to 3,000 Americans die every year from mesothelioma, an inoperable form of cancer that typically affects the lining of the lungs due to asbestos inhalation. The disease is extremely hard to diagnose – often 30 years or more after exposure to asbestos – and once diagnosed, is resistant to many standard cancer treatments.
Commonly used in the construction industry, workers and even military personnel are at high risk of contracting mesothelioma. In fact, an estimated 1.3 million construction and general industry workers remain exposed to asbestos, if not properly trained and protected against the dangers of mesothelioma.
This year, Mesothelioma Awareness Day will include an informative window display at 10 Rockefeller Plaza, complete with a video about the signs and symptoms of mesothelioma. The Meso Foundation, a non-profit advocacy group dedicated to finding a cure for mesothelioma, is spearheading the month-long event.
The pharmaceutical company EHE International, a leader in preventive medicine and early detection of preventable diseases, is donating the window display.
