Salmonella in the Water Supply Costs Colorado Town $360,000 to Settle Lawsuit

Sep. 17, 2010 -- The city of Alamosa, Colo., has settled a 2008 salmonella contamination lawsuit that claimed the city sold tainted water to its customers. The settlement to 29 complainants was reportedly $360,000.

The outbreak, which resulted in one death and 400 reported cases of sickness, may have sickened up to 1,300 people, according to state health experts.

According to the Alamosa Valley Courier, the city has made significant changes to the water system since the outbreak, but the city was notified of cracking in the water-storage tank as early as 1997.
