'Eat at Your Own Risk' Could Be New FDA Slogan

Sept. 13, 2010 /EIN PRESSWIRE/ -- How safe is the US food supply? By the government's own accounts, food-borne diseases cause an estimated 76 million illnesses annually. That's 1 out of every 4 people in the US contracting some sickness from the simple act of eating.

While many illnesses come as a result of poor food handling, others are directly traceable to problems at food processors overseen by the Food & Drug Administration (FDA).

Consumer groups are raising their voices in an attempt to convince the government to give food recall power to the FDA, as opposed to the voluntary recalls in place today.

But even if the agency were given that power through Senate Bill 510, the FDA Food Safety Modernization Act, does its track record really demonstrate any confidence in its ability to improve the safety of the food supply?
