Quality Inn scheduled for demo following carcinogenic asbestos removal

The city of Dearborn, Michigan will see the former Quality Inn on Michigan Avenue fall. The building will be torn down by the end of the year, with demolition beginning next month.

The motel, which closed in 2005, has remained vacant. The property is owned by the city and is tax exempt, reports Press and Guide.

Bierlein, contractor for the project, will begin environmental abatement on September 7. Such abatement involves asbestos removal. Environmental site assessments have documented the existence of contaminated soil on the property. The material can also be found in the obsolete buildings.

In order to demolish the buildings, asbestos must first be removed. For when the toxic material is disturbed, during renovation or demolition, the particles can become airborne, and pose a serious health risk to workers and community residents.

Extended exposure to the hazardous material has been known to cause several diseases, including asbestosis, lung cancer and mesothelioma. Mesothelioma is a rare disease, known to affect 3,000 Americans each year.

Symptoms of the asbestos cancer lie dormant for 10 to 50 years. Due to the disease’s dormant nature, doctors fail to diagnose patients in the early stages of their disease, and in general mesothelioma treatment methods are only palliative.

Once the contaminants are removed, demolition is expected to start. Officials have predicted that the demolition will begin September 20. “We anticipate having the demolition process wrapped up in about 60 days,” noted Barry Murray, director of Dearborn’s Economic and Community Development Department.
