Close to fifty companies named in asbestos lawsuit

A son has filed suit against 45 companies, alleging the defendants negligently exposed his father to asbestos, and ultimately caused his death, reports The Southeast Texas Record. Fred Brinkman, Jr. filed the suit on behalf of his father, Fred Brinkman, on August 23 in the Jefferson County District Court.

Brinkman worked as a brick mason for Huber Construction and Able Supply at several refineries. His career long exposure to asbestos is thought to have caused his death. Brinkman died of lung cancer on December 31, 2008.

Many diseases have been known to form from extended asbestos exposure. Asbestos is a highly hazardous material, once exploited for its fire retardant properties. When disturbed, the toxic particles can become airborne, and pose a serious health risk to those exposed.

Extended exposure to the material has not only been known to cause lung cancer, but asbestosis and mesothelioma. Mesothelioma is the rarest and most aggressive asbestos-related disease.

Many patients diagnosed with the asbestos cancer fail to receive treatment in the early stages of their disease. Due to an extended latency period, doctors fail to diagnose patients early on. Mesothelioma treatment typically consists of mainstream therapies including chemo, and there is no cure for this disease.

Fred Brinkman, Jr. has accused the defendants of conspiring to conceal the dangers of asbestos products, and intentionally exposing workers to the material.

Brinkman, Jr. is suing for exemplary damages, mental anguish, medical expenses and lost wages.
