City of Chillicothe seeks $400,000 grant for asbestos removal
The city of Chillicothe, Missouri is seeking funds to remove asbestos from the old prison property, located at 1500 West Third Street. The city is expected to act Monday night on an ordinance which would allow the city to apply for a grant, reports Chillicothenews. The $400,000 grant would be provided by the EPA’s Brownfield Revolving Loan Fund.
The 60 acres property houses 32 structures, 12 of which contain hazardous asbestos material. The majority of the asbestos was found in the floor tiles, as well as in the buildings.
Asbestos is a highly hazardous material, found in many older homes and buildings. When disturbed, the particles can pose a serious health risk to those exposed. Extended exposure to the material has been known to cause asbestosis, lung cancer and even mesothelioma.
Mesothelioma is the most aggressive asbestos-related disease, which, unfortunately, lacks a cure. Mesothelioma clinics suggest patients undergo palliative treatment in order to fight their disease but there is no mesothelioma cure. Mesothelioma treatment is simply an effort to extend a patient’s life expectancy.
The city has approved the Foutch Brothers’ proposal to rehabilitate many of the former prison’s existing structures. The company plans to establish 95 residential units as well as 6,000 square feet of office space and 8,000 square feet of retail space.
The city of Chillicothe is asking the EPA to waive the $100,000 limit in order to attain the additional $300,000 for the project. If the city isn’t allowed to apply for $400,000, Foutch Brothers, LL, will pay the remaining amount.
