Response By Yellow Shield To UK Environment Agency Report On Spill Control
Yellow Shield, a UK environmental control company, releases response to recent UK Environment Agency report 'Spill Prevention for Transport, Logistics and Distribution Industries', listing recommended actions for best practice.
PRESS DISPENSARY - Thursday, Jul 29, 2010 - Environmental control company Yellow Shield has released a response to the recent Environment Agency report 'Spill Prevention for Transport, Logistics and Distribution Industries'.
Background:
The report was jointly released by the Environment Agency, who act as both environmental regulator and advisory service, and the BSIF (the British Safety Industry Federation) who are a trade body within the safety industry and an HSE recognised competent authority.
The report brought together directors and senior managers from leading national and international companies within the transport, logistics and haulage industry. A combination of roundtable discussions, interviews and surveys were used to understand key spill related issues affecting the industry.
These companies included Sainsburys, Kuehne + Nagel, Wincanton, Azkso Nobel, United Biscuits and BP.
Cause for concern:
In the report, the Environment Agency identified the transport, logistics, and distribution industry as being responsible for the largest number of spill and pollution incidents in the UK.
The report highlighted the fact that 50% of transport, logistics and distribution companies have suffered a serious spill as a direct result of their activities
These incidents refer to:
• Fuel and oil spills in depot
• Spillages of polluting liquid cargos whist handling (milk, soft drinks, chemicals)
• Fuel and oil spills on the highway
Yellow Shield always takes industry experience seriously, especially where it can help your business. In response to the report, they said: "It's a real eye opener to see that the EA recorded over 500 spillage incidents in this industry in 2009 alone. All these incidents ended in environmental pollution and most likely prosecution with fines, significant clean up costs, and the loss of otherwise good reputations."
"Furthermore the report is of particular interest as many of the issues highlighted are not unique to this particular industry but can and do occur across all industry sectors."
After careful studying of the report, Yellow Shield has created a simple checklist that companies can follow in order to help them achieve 'best practice' in spill control.
How to achieve best practice:
Yellow Shield offers a free comprehensive site assessment service which looks at the company's overall preparedness to deal with an on-site spill. The assessment involves an evaluation by an experienced assessor, followed by a written report outlining conclusions and recommendations.
Kate Church, Head of Customer Advisory Services at Yellow Shield, said: "The costs of reacting to spills in a tough economic environment are not costs that are easy to explain to a board, but pre-planning for the consequences through thorough site assessments are some of the simplest steps site managers and transport operators can take to off-load the concern".
Suitable products to achieve best practice:
Yellow Shield offer a comprehensive range of products to satisfy both current and future spill related legislation in spill control. Companies are invited to visit their "how to achieve best practices" webpage for further guidance and to view a full list of suitable products.
This range includes secondary containment systems for bunding and storage of oils and chemicals, drain protection to help ensure spills do not enter water courses, and spill kits for quick and effective response to hazardous spills.
Yellow Shield also offer accredited spill awareness and response training courses. These courses are designed to raise awareness of spill risk, ensure that operatives become fully competent in spill prevention and spill response.
The awareness and training of staff is key to minimising spill risk and achieving effective spill control.
