Asbestos-ridden 850 ft. sewer pipe to be removed from McLean, Virginia

Virginia Mesothelioma Reporter - An 850-foot, asbestos-ridden sewer pipe is scheduled for removal from Tyson’s Corner in McLean, Virginia, in an attempt to prevent the development of mesothelioma within the city.



The asbestos abatement work will shut down two lanes on the East side of Jones Branch Drive, shifting traffic to the West side of the street. Construction workers plan to wear anti-contamination clothing and respirators to prevent inhalation to the toxic fiber.



Asbestos is a highly dangerous material, most commonly used in the construction industry including drywall and roofing. Exposure to asbestos has been known to cause mesothelioma, asbestosis and lung cancer. Mesothelioma the most deadly asbestos related cancer, and there is no known cure.



Workers are expected to remove and seal 20-foot sections of the sewer pipe in order to prevent any of the asbestos from becoming airborne. The work is scheduled to begin in early 2011, and be finished entirely by 2013.
