Las Vegas Explosion: Shrapnel, debris injured 2 during transformer explosion

Las Vegas, NV—Flying bricks and shrapnel injured two people on the street when a transformer exploded on Sunday, July 11, 2010. The explosion occurred around 6:36 a.m., at a NV Energy substation located at 1004 S. Main, as reported by the Las Vegas Sun.
Two people were rushed to the University Medical Center for treatment of injuries that were afflicted by bricks and shrapnel that was thrown during the explosion. The victim’s injuries were not considered to be life threatening.
The explosion reportedly broke several windows, damaged other nearby properties and littered the sidewalk up to a block away from the explosion with shards of glass. A fire also erupted from the explosion and was put out by firefighters by 8:45 a.m. Because of the high voltage electricity running through the substation, the fire couldn’t be put out until the power was shut off.
A gas leak was also discovered underneath the street near the explosion at Coolidge Avenue and First Street. Authorities are currently trying to determine if the gas leak and the explosion are related.
A full investigation is underway.
