Boston Workplace Accident News by Nicole Howley Boston Workplace Accident News
Boston, MA—An explosion at an Everett substation injured two NSTAR workers on Thursday, June 24, 2010. The “flash” explosion occurred at 173 Alford St. at about 1:30 p.m., as the workers were performing maintenance on a circuit, as reported by the Boston Herald.

The two workers were reportedly doing some maintenance work on a circuit at the substation, which is connected to the Mystic power plant, when “the massive, faulty electrical current occurred.” Officials with the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) described the explosion as a “flash incident.”

Both of the workers were rushed by responding emergency medical services (EMS) teams to Massachusetts General Hospital. One worker was treated for burns, while the other was treated for smoke inhalation. Their injuries were not considered to be life-threatening.

Flash incidents usually happened when a “large electrical current is diverted from its insulated path, generating massive volumes of hot air, turning metal into vapor and generating tremendous pressure in a very brief time.”

OSHA officials and the Everett fire department are conducting a full investigation into the workplace accident.
