 At Rio Tinto's , he led the project business analysis for operating mines and projects. Winklemann is a mining engineer with a MBA from the University of Oxford.

Canada-based Western Coal is a producer of metallurgical coal from mines in northeast British Columbia and metallurgical coal and compliant thermal coal from mines located in West Virginia.

Western Coal also owns around 55% of Energybuild Group, which produces anthracite and metallurgical coal in South Wales, UK.
