The Faculty Of Intensive Care Medicine
The Royal College of Anaesthetists, the College of Emergency Medicine and the various Royal Colleges of Physicians and Surgeons in the UK announce the establishment of the Faculty of Intensive Care Medicine of the United Kingdom.
PRESS DISPENSARY - Sunday, May 16, 2010 - The Presidents of the listed Colleges are pleased to announce the establishment of the Faculty of Intensive Care Medicine of the United Kingdom. The Faculty will be located in and administered from the Royal College of Anaesthetists. The initiative is strongly supported by the Intensive Care Society and trainee groups.
The Faculty is formed to set and promote, on behalf of parent Colleges, the best possible standards of care for critically ill patients. This will be achieved through development of the science of intensive care medicine and promotion of career-long education, training and professional development of medical practitioners to deliver intensive care medicine.
In composition and leadership, the Faculty will reflect the multidisciplinary ethos of intensive care, which is a particular strength of UK clinical practice within the specialty.
A Founding Board of the Faculty will be established by October 2010 from the appointed representatives of parent Colleges. The Faculty Board will also have a co-opted representative from each of the following: the Intensive Care Society, a trainee in advanced ICM and a lay member.
Applications for Foundation Fellowship from specialists working in intensive care in the UK will be invited from January 2011 with an application 'window' of 12 months. Criteria for Foundation Fellowship will be announced in autumn 2010.
Other categories of membership, including those for trainees, are currently being developed and will be announced and opened for application during 2011. It is emphasized that there will ultimately be a category of membership of the Faculty available to all medical practitioners working in intensive care medicine in the UK.
