Mesothelioma Alert: California theater to close temporarily for asbestos removal

In Downey, California, the local theater will be shut down over this coming summer for asbestos abatement and updates to the HVAC system. The removal of asbestos is required by law, and is also a matter of public health. The 738-seat Downey Theater currently has a heating, ventilation and air conditioning system has not been replaced since the theater was built in 1971, and is long overdue for an upgrade.

“It no longer operates efficiently in terms of energy consumption, is no longer environmentally sustainable and requires constant maintenance and repair,” Public Works Director Brian Ragland revealed.

However, before the HVAC system can be installed, asbestos must be removed from the theatre in accordance with OSHA regulations. The asbestos present at the site is embedded in sprayed-on fireproofing material and insulation.

Asbestos removal is important, as inhalation of these tiny fibers can lead to the development of mesothelioma, a rare form of cancer. Mesothelioma affects less than 3,000 Americans each year, and while there are palliative mesothelioma treatment methods available, including chemo, there is no known cure. Sadly, this aggressive cancer kills the majority of patients within 24 months of being diagnosed.

The work will begin in late July and run for about 25 days, wrapping up sometime in August. According to local reports, it will cost $28,730 to remove the asbestos from the building. This money will come from a federal Department of Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant, and the project will be overseen by CF Environmental Inc., a company with a past history of similar projects.
