Helping Men To Be Health Aware

In response to the unnecessarily poor health of many men in the UK, The Royal Society for Public Health is launching a new one day course for health professionals working with male patients, supported by the Men's Health Forum.

PRESS DISPENSARY - Monday, May 10, 2010 - The Royal Society for Public Health (http://www.rsph.org.uk), with support from the Men's Health Forum, has launched a new one day course for health professionals working with male patients.

Men's health is unnecessarily poor. Too many men still die prematurely with just 66% reaching the age of 75. Men are more likely than women to die from heart disease, cancer and suicide, to be overweight, to smoke and to drink alcohol excessively. Yet men are less likely to use a wide range of health services effectively or take part in health improvement programmes. In response to these critical issues, this course has been developed to assist with the effective delivery of health services to men.

Professor Richard Parish, Chief Executive of RSPH comments "It is vital to facilitate men's access to health information, to encourage them to be health aware, make healthy lifestyle choices and to access health services. This workshop will be invaluable to all frontline staff working with men with a remit to encourage them to improve and maintain good health. "

Jo McCullagh, the course leader, adds "Working in Public Health I am very well aware of the main health problems affecting men, the barriers they face in using health services and how reluctant they can be to ask for help. Health improvement initiatives specifically for men play an important part in giving them the knowledge, understanding and confidence to help improve their health".

The first workshop will take place on 26th May 2010, shortly before Men's Health Week in June. Complimentary copies of Men's Health Forum 'Mini Manuals' will be provided to all delegates.
