Mesothelioma Alert: Woman diagnosed with mesothelioma after secondhand asbestos exposure
An aging woman has been diagnosed with mesothelioma, a rare and aggressive cancer caused almost exclusively by asbestos exposure. She believes that she contracted the disease after helping with the family laundry, where she was subsequently exposed to asbestos fibers that were brought home on her father’s work clothes.
Barbara Larimore, age 73, was diagnosed with mesothelioma in 2008. While there are palliative treatment methods available, including chemo, there is no known cure for mesothelioma. The disease typically lies dormant for up to fifty years before an individual begins to suffer from mesothelioma symptoms, and the majority of patients lose their battle with mesothelioma cancer in less than two years following diagnosis. Exposure to asbestos can also lead to other respiratory problems including asbestosis or scarring of the lining of the lungs.
Ms. Larimore’s father worked as a bricklayer for a iron foundry where he worked with many asbestos-containing products. She told reporters, "I used to help my mother to wash father’s dirty work clothes. I would stand on my parents’ back step and shake out the dust before washing them. It horrifies me now that by doing that simple thing all those years ago I was setting myself up for this disease."
Reuben Greenwood, Ms. Larimore’s legal counsel, told reporters: "In order to build up an accurate picture of Ms. Larimore’s exposure to asbestos, it is important we speak to anyone who can recall the working conditions at Leys Malleable Castings [the location where Larimore's father worked] between 1965 and 1969."
