US, Russia Poultry Trade to Resume after Producers Agree to Halt Chlorine Use

April 14, 2010 - Russia will resume poultry imports from the US after US producers agreed to stop using chlorine in the treatment process of meat being exported to Russia, according to the Moscow Times.

Poultry trade between the two countries was suspended at the beginning of 2010 after Russia enacted regulations that banned the use of chlorine treatment in poultry.

US Chicken export to Russia totals more than $600 million per year, the Times stated. That will most likely change drastically in the next five years as the Russian government is calling for most of the meat consumed in Russia be produced in the country -- with the hopes of all poultry imports ceasing by 2015.
