FirstAlert(tm) Daily 4/8: Hump Day Blues
- Market Commentary -
April 8, 2010 (FinancialWire) (By Bob Farley) — Massey Energy (NYSE: MEE) will survive the tragedy that has taken the lives of more than two dozen miners this week. Maybe they'll be fined again for another series of shortcomings that skirted the issues of safety in exchange for adding to their bottom line. And in time, another one or two or more miners will die from an accident that cold have been avoided if rules were followed.
Harvesting the riches hidden in the ground is scary, dangerous, and at least in this country, pays reasonably well, well enough for many men to risk their lives to the pursuit. Those who risk another day of life tomorrow, stand on the shoulders of the ones lost in the ground yesterday and all the years before.
Ironically, forcing Massey to comply with laws could result in shutting the company down, or at least shutting down those segments of the business that don't profit enough. So everyday workers have to take a chance on staying alive or going on unemployment or moving away.

Then, the fastest runner and then the smartest person in the world. One by one my delusions got shut down. Now I just see myself as the lamest guy in the world." Jack Black
