Mesothelioma Alert: Texas family files asbestos-related lawsuit
The surviving wife and children of a deceased Texas man have filed a lawsuit against oil giant Chevron, arguing that the death of the man was caused by work-related asbestos exposure. Julia Fontenot, Adam Fontenot, Elbert Fontenot, Shelton Fontenot Jr., Kenneth Fontenot, Deborah Reed and Regineld Fontenot claim their husband and father, Shelton J. Fontenot, worked for an oil refinery as a pipefitter and instrument mechanic in Port Arthur. It was at this plant that he was exposed to the asbestos fibers that would eventually claim his life, the suit states.
According to court documents, Shelton J. Fontenot died "a painful and terrible death" from pulmonary asbestosis and lung cancer on June 29th of last year.
Asbestos exposure is conclusively linked to the development of asbestosis, various types of lung cancer, and mesothelioma, a rare form of cancer. Mesothelioma affects less than 3,000 Americans each year, and while there are palliative treatment methods available, including chemo, there is no known cure.
According to local news sources, “Chevron negligently knew asbestos-containing products could cause deadly disease, but still allowed their employees to work with the products.” In addition, the company is at fault in this matter for allegedly failing to warn and/or protect workers from the dangers of asbestos exposure.
The plaintiffs filed the lawsuit earlier this month, and are seeking damages plus court costs. The case will be heard by Judge Donald Floyd of the 172nd District Court.
