Asbestos Cancer Alert: Vacant medical building requires extensive asbestos removal
In Brownwood, Texas, the vacant Medical Arts Hospital building has been slated for demolition. The building must be demolished, rather than renovated, because of severe structural damage. However, before the building can be torn down, it must first undergo asbestos abatement.
The Brownwood Economic Development Corporation is making plans to hire someone to take on the asbestos abatement project. The city will then approve the demolition after the asbestos issues plaguing the building have been resolved.
Asbestos exposure has been linked to the development of mesothelioma, a rare but lethal form of cancer. Mesothelioma affects less than 3,000 Americans each year, and while there are palliative treatment methods available, including chemo, there is no known cure. The disease typically lies dormant for up to fifty years before an individual begins to suffer from mesothelioma symptoms, and the majority of patients lose their battle with this cancer in less than two years.
According to the US EPA, “Exposure to asbestos increases your risk of developing lung disease…In general, the greater the exposure to asbestos, the greater the chance of developing harmful health effects…Smoking increases the risk of developing illness from asbestos exposure.”
Once the building has been demolished, it has been rumored that Texas State Technical College might use the property to house some future expansion projects. to use of the property for possible future expansions. The estimated combined cost of abatement and demolition of the building is $75,000.
