US Urged to Take China to WTO over Googlegate
January 26, 2010 /EIN PRESSWIRE/ As the Googlegate controversy begins to boil, free-speech groups are calling on Washington to take China before the WTO for violations of global trade rules.
Likening the Great Firewall of China to a blockading of imports, groups want the WTO to force China to give equal treatment to the "import" of online services, something China agreed to in 2001 when it joined the WTO.
China for its part is accusing the US of politicizing Googlegate, trying to harm China's image, with the People's Daily newspaper saving the best shot for Google, saying: "Perhaps Google has already realised that China can do without Google, but without China, Google does not have a future."
