Dairy Products Recalled over Chemical Contamination in China
January 25, 2010 /EIN PRESSWIRE/ Health officials in China have discovered that the industrial compound melamine has seeped into the food supply, and authorities have ordered the recall of dairy products in the southern part of the country.
Melamine is the same chemical that caused a similar scandal in the country in 2008, and for the third time in the last month, authorities have discovered melamine in dairy products, suggesting that the problem from 2008 has not been resolved.
Commonly used in plastics and fertilizer, melamine can cause kidney failure, with toddlers and infants being the most vulnerable to the chemical. In the 2008 incident, 300,000 children were sickened due to melamine.
