FirstAlert(tm) Daily 12/23: S&P Close To Breakout During Small Stock Surge
December 23, 2009 (FinancialWire) (By Dr. Joe Duarte) — The S&P SPDR ETF (NYSE: SPY) almost made a new high on 12-22, but the good news is that the Russell 2000 ETF (NYSE: IWM) actually got a lot closer, suggesting that the market may have found a new source of fuel for the advance, the small stocks.
The stock market may have started a new up leg this week, powered by the small stocks. As the U.S. Dollar has strengthened, the small stocks, as is often the case have begun to move higher. The reason is that many small companies are hurt by the weak dollar, which spurs sales of large multinational companies. A good way to look at this is to compare the Russell 2000 Index of small stocks and the Dow Jones Industrial average, which houses many of the large cap multinational companies that tend to benefit from a weaker dollar. The Russell is well within one or two good days from a new high, while the Dow, although acting well, is still closer to the middle of its recent trading range.
More important is the action on the NYSE advance decline line, which made a new high for the move from the March bottom on 12-22. Also a positive is the action in the number of stocks making 52-week highs.
When you put it all together, it looks as if the Santa Claus rally is here, and if things continue as they are at the moment it could well translate into a pretty traditional January effect. What happens beyond January, though, is anyone’s guess.
