As reported by the Dayton Daily News, WSU relocated several employees who work at the center due to the contamination; however, the university has stated that removal of the asbestos is needed for updates despite there being no immediate health threat. Robert Sweeney, executive vice president and WSU board secretary, is quoted in the report as stating of the issue, “We can’t drill into the walls and do the technology upgrades that we need to bring the building up to the state-of-the-art until the asbestos is abated.” As noted in the report, asbestos was used in the construction of the Kettering Center, which was built in 1971.
