December 14, 2009 (FinancialWire) (By Genevieve Hawkins) — Wall Street put in a mixed performance last week and with an inconsistent forecast possible from the likes of Best Buy (NYSE: BBY) investors may get more of the same.

Last week the Dow rose 0.8%, the S&P 500 remained flat and the Nasdaq slipped 0.2% as market watchers tried to make sense of contradictory trends. For many months a falling U.S. dollar boosted stocks while a rising dollar sank them as investors took U.S. denominated currency elsewhere for better yields. Ironically, the dollar carry trade may unwind if economic reports are better than expected, as this may signal that the Federal Reserve’s low interest rates are no longer needed.

For the coming week economic data is expected on industrial production, housing starts and the November consumer price index. If the data is better than expected, the markets may go lower without assurances that the Fed will keep interest rates at 0%. Investors may also pull money in an effort to book 2009 profits.

As the year closes out its final weeks, the Federal Reserve may find itself in a tricky position regarding when to raise interest rates…
