The upgrades have also resulted in the overall expansion of Globalstar’s Simplex data network coverage. Globalstar now offers Simplex coverage in previously un-served areas including parts of Western Asia and numerous maritime coastal and oceanic regions plus continuous northern hemisphere coverage across the Atlantic Ocean.

The increased receiver sensitivity resulting from the network upgrades not only expands Globalstar’s geographic Simplex coverage area but it also offers enhanced reliability in certain usage environments and operating conditions. The Globalstar Simplex data network is used to support a variety of emergency asset, fleet management and personal tracking applications. The company expects the increased messaging capacity and receiver sensitivity will also benefit users of Globalstar’s award-winning SPOT Satellite GPS Messenger products.

Earlier this year Globalstar began installing the upgrades at its gateway ground station facility located in Wasilla, Alaska. The company completed the installation of the enhanced software at all of its gateways equipped with Simplex data appliques in late November.

In addition to supporting the SPOT Satellite GPS Messenger and various asset tracking product solutions, the Globalstar Simplex data network is also used to support a number of remote monitoring and alarm applications, both within and beyond the reach of traditional wireless and terrestrial infrastructure.
