Vandalia, IL—A fire at the Natural Gas Pipeline Company of America left two gas plant workers injured. The workers were reportedly welding on a storage tank when the fire ignited on Wednesday, October 28, 2009 around 1:00 p.m., at the St. Elmo plant, as reported by KTVI. The two unidentified workers were reportedly conducting some welding work on an above ground storage tank filled with natural gas, when the fire ignited. Witnesses stated they heard a series of explosions in connection with the fire. Investigators are currently trying to uncover what had ignited the fire. Two workers sustained injuries in the blaze, and were transported by area emergency medical services (EMS) crews to Effingham hospital for treatment by medical professionals. It is currently unknown how serious the injuries the workers sustained were. The fire was reportedly contained to the property and didn’t spread to any other areas. When rescue crews arrived at the scene of the blaze they reported seeing flames and “balls of smoke as high as you can see.” The St. Elmo Police Department and officials with the federal Occupational Health and Safety Administration (OSHA) http://www.osha.gov/ are conducting a full investigation into the plant fire.
