November 2, 2009 (FinancialWire) — Medical technology company Stryker Corp. (NYSE: SYK) said that Stephen P. MacMillan, the firm’s president and CEO, has been appointed chairman in addition to his current responsibilities. He replaces John W. Brown, who will retire as chairman and a director effective December 31.

Brown joined the company as president and CEO in 1977 and served in those positions until 2003. He has been a director since 1977 and chairman since 1981.

In explaining his move, Brown said, “This timing is consistent with my original goal of providing a 5-year overlap with Steve MacMillan.”

Kalamazoo, Michigan-based Stryker offers a range of products in orthopaedics and has a presence in other medical specialties. The company’s products include implants used in joint replacement, trauma, craniomaxillofacial and spinal surgeries. It also offers biologics, surgical, neurologic, ear, nose & throat and interventional pain equipment as well as endoscopic, surgical navigation, communications and digital imaging systems, patient handling and emergency medical equipment.
