September 25, 2009 (FinancialWire) — KVH Industries, Inc., (NASDAQ: KVHI) said it has received a new $2.1 million order for its precision fiber optic gyros for use in remote stabilized weapon stations from a major defense contractor.

The fiber optic gyros play a role in the use of remote weapon stations used to improve the safety of U.S. and allied warfighters as well as increase their efficiency and effectiveness in the field, according to KVH.

Remote weapon stations allow gunners to operate, aim, and fire the weapon from inside the safety of their vehicles, taking the gunners out of turret positions where they are exposed to hostile fire. The gyros provide optical stabilization and weapon recoil control for RWS units while ensuring that the weapon stays on target whether the vehicle is stationary or on the move.

Shipment of the order is scheduled to be completed in early 2010.
