Las Vegas Casino Slammed with $10 Million Dollar Asbestos Lawsuit

A former Harrah’s employee is suing the famous Las Vegas resort and casino for $10 million. Ernie Savannah alleges that he and his three year old son became ill after he was exposed to asbestos at Harrah’s. Savannah’s son was allegedly exposed in a secondhand fashion, perhaps when he inhaled asbestos fibers that were transferred home on Savannah’s clothing.

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration warned the hotel about asbestos-related violations and dangers. All told, OSHA inspectors reported that they found a dozen serious asbestos-related violations involving asbestos at Harrah’s.

Savannah is heartbroken over the health of his young son. Three year old Nico looks healthy, but his lungs are weakened, and the child often coughs, wheezes, and has difficulty breathing.

“I’m trying to battle with it. Most the time it breaks me down…every time I look at him,” said Savannah.

Respiratory problems caused by exposure to asbestos include mesothelioma, asbestosis, and lung cancer. These diseases are typically diagnosed in older adults, but in recent years mesothelioma has been reported in individuals as young as age thirteen.

Savannah filed the lawsuit against Harrah’s alleging that the hotel/casino was aware of the dangers of asbestos, but failed to protect workers and employees on site. Says Mr. Savannah: “I knew it was asbestos, and I continued to work there because I needed the insurance and the income for my family. And it’s really hard to get an engineering job, you know, that pays good wages.”

“Harrah’s is not really a bad company. I’m disappointed in Harrah’s because the fact of my baby. He can’t bring his life back. And they’re not taking responsibility for their actions…Every employee was affected — every EVS (housekeeping) worker, cocktail waitress, customer — when we didn’t do the asbestos abatement. Everybody breathes those fibers,” Savannah said.
