Swiss Health Care System Deserves Consideration, Says Burrell
Editorial
July 8, 2009 (FinancialWire) — Since about April of this year, some areas in the market have shown signs of life, and the health care sector’s related exchange traded funds (ETFs) could be considered as one such area. While, in the last few years, health care stocks have performed relatively the same as their related ETF in the S&P, Health Care Select Sector SPDR (NYSE: XLV), the sector has seen increased activity with mergers and takeovers, and more buyout deals may be on the way. Other health care ETFs of note have been the iShares Dow Jones U.S. Healthcare Sector Index Fund (NYSE: IYH), the Vanguard Healthcare ETF (NYSE: VHT), the Rydex S&P Equal Weight Health Care ETF (NYSE: RYH) and the PowerShares Dynamic Healthcare Sector Portfolio (NYSE: PTH).
However, in the midst of such market attention and activity to the health care sector, FinancialWire editorial contributor, Bud Burrell, offers some food for thought, in terms of the overall direction being taken:
Burrell comments that, “The Government of Switzerland mandates a health care system that does everything that Obama’s plan does, privately, paid for by citizens from payroll contributions.
“Their retirement system is paid for privately, again by mandatory payroll contributions.
“They radically limit malpractice causes of actions against doctors and hospitals, and claims against drug companies, except that willful malfeasance by a drug company is punishable by hard prison time.
“With a native population of 10 Million, they are still able to support the health care needs of 2.5 Million imported workers privately, none of whom except the most incredibly outstanding will ever become Swiss citizens.
“This small country is the most militarized in the developed world, with mandatory military service for every citizen 18 to 45, followed by 10 years of inactive reserve to age 55. The Israeli Army is modeled on their systems.
“When I say every citizen, that is what I mean, including women. If you are missing a leg, you sit at desk and do administration, in a uniform, or you build bunk beds in their bomb shelters.
“The Swiss system is a true Federalist system, unlike what socialists want of the US today. The Cantons (analogous to our States) are affiliated only for support of the military and foreign relations, under what is known as “La Place de La Concorde de La Suisse” whose principles date back to 1200, making Switzerland the oldest functioning democracy in the World.
“This federalist system was the original model of our USG, until it gradually began to be submerged by creeping socialism.
“The SWF will not collapse, no matter what happens in the rest of the World.
Instead of talking of the healthcare and governmental systems of the UK and Canada, I would assert we should be modeling ourselves on the nation of Switzerland.”
