Saint Francisville, LA (MMD Newswire) May 6, 2009 -- This event is a bicyclist's dream, but it isn't limited to bicyclist fanatics. The first annual West Feliciana Memorial Day Classic is an opportunity for beginners and experienced bikers or anyone just interested in cycling. Parents are invited to bring their children out and to be a kid again by riding a bike through a countryside carved with hills and ravines.

The setting for this event could not be more beautiful, but as beautiful as it is, it is just as challenging. The hills of West Feliciana Parish will challenge the rider with five different races offering a level of difficulty for everyone.

"With several races from which to choose, everyone should be able to find something that suits their fitness level. In addition, the scenic beauty of some of the south's most famous plantations wrapped around a cozy, small town-provides an atmosphere that is truly relaxing," Ambrose Sims, West Feliciana Parish Manager said.

The bicycling weekend begins on Saturday, May 23 with an 8K time trial course at Hemingbough through Monday, the 25 with the Baton Rouge Bike Club's (BRBC) Spring Century at the West Feliciana Parish Sports Park (WFPSP).

The 8K time trial course at Hemingbough has riders cycling around Romanesque buildings and an amphitheatre which sits on a placid lake. White egrets and beautiful peacocks, which have come to symbolize Hemingbough, can be seen throughout the landscape.

The short criterion course runs through the heart of historical West Feliciana, the town of St. Francisville, which is the oldest town in the Florida parishes. St. Francisville referred to by some as "two miles long, two miles wide," has streets lined with 18th century homes. This second race is sure to be a crowd pleaser with its historical landmarks.

The longer road race starts and ends at West Feliciana High School, the pride of the parish with its state and national rankings. This particular race takes riders through 36 miles of paved country roads, up and down rolling hills, with one grueling climb up the infamous Red Bug Hill, which is one of the early foothills of the Appalachian Mountains.

On Sunday afternoon for race four, the Baton Rouge Advocates for Safe Streets (BRASS) will offer a family-oriented touring ride through the historic landmarks of West Feliciana culminating at the WFPSP for a picnic lunch and an awards ceremony. The sports park is a nationally recognized facility for its architecture and design.

The Spring Century, hosted by BRBC, is the final race for the classic offering routes that are 10, 25, 50, 62 and 100 miles in length. This perennial favorite of cyclists also culminates at the WFPSP with lunch provided to all participants. Proceeds from both the BRASS and BRBC rides will go toward cycling safety classes.

West Feliciana Parish promises to be a great home for this event and its participants. The bike routes not only highlight the scenic beauty of the parish, but also the nationally recognized facilities that make West Feliciana truly one of the best kept secrets in the south. The Memorial Day Classic will be held rain or shine.
