Ohio elections-Cleveland area voters weigh asbestos abatement project
Ohio’s 2009 local elections find Bedford Public Schools asbestos removal on ballot.
Cleveland, OH(MesotheliomaCancerNews.com)--Bedford Public School District, where academy award winning actress, Halle Berry, graduated from high school, placed funding for asbestos removal, on Tuesday’s local election ballot. As reported by the Toldo Blade, Bedford schools are asking voters to approve a half million dollar “sinking fund” levy for school maintenance, construction, and repairs.
The Bedford Public School District is seeking a five year levy for asbestos abatement, roof work, dry wall, improved school heating, and new construction. Asbestos is a known carcinogen that federal and state laws require specific licensure and certification to demolish because of the toxic asbestos fibers. The levy would provide approximately $527,000 a year from tax payers for construction, renovations, and school district operations. Asbestos abatement is a highly costly and tedious process. Proper handling and removal of asbestos containing materials must be done following federal and state laws, to ensure the safety of children, school workers, and district staff. Any direct and secondary exposure to asbestos fibers can causes asbestos related illnesses and cancers like mesothelioma lung cancer.
