Entrepreneur Takes On LoveDare; Opens Heart & Wallet to Kids in Need
Canadian entrepreneur and writer, Claude La Vertu of the small village of Hastings, Ontario (Canada) whose first novel entitled "LoveDare", has taken the powerful message of his heartwarming novel a step further by sharing profits from every copy sold with various children's organizations across Canada and the United States.
La Vertu's novel, originally destined to become a movie script, is a story about a wealthy young entrepreneur who takes on a pay-it-forward type challenge called the "LoveDare" by opting to care for a dying boy with a painful past, but as time goes by and the boy slowly fades, the entrepreneur's profound attachment to the boy changes his life forever. "The novel was a labor of love," says La Vertu in reference to writing, publishing and promoting LoveDare, "But it wasn't with-out its challenges." Shortly after LoveDare was released in 2008, another book entitled "The Love Dare" was released in the United States. Although La Vertu was encouraged by many to take legal action, if for no other reason for the publicity it would generate, he decided to leave it to a higher power. "I prayed about it, and when I saw that the other book was saving marriages and bringing people closer to God, I thought; how do you take legal action against something so good for humanity...how do you write about love and then sue another person who writes about love?"
La Vertu's biggest challenge in promo-ting his self-published novel was the endless roadblocks he encountered with book stores, and he found himself particularly disappoint-ted with the large stores who make it difficult for independent writers to make their works available through their stores. "You'd think writers would get more encouragement from the stores," says La Vertu, "If it weren't for writers, those stores wouldn't exist!" More concerned with sharing an in-spiring story and helping kids in need than with making money, La Vertu decided to take on all aspects of distributing his novel including promoting, advertising and ship-ping, and after realizing he'd created new jobs for others and made more profit by handling everything himself, he saw a perfect opportunity to set the example of taking on his own LoveDare and help kids. "It made more sense to take the inflated profits the stores were demanding and give it to kids."
To underscore La Vertu's endeavor to raise funds for children's charities, he's pledged $1 for every copy sold through his website throughout the month of May to the Kids Help Phone organization, in celebration of their 20th anniversary, as well as an undisclosed percentage of all the months profits. "My goal is to raise awareness and funds for many children's charities," says La Vertu while expressing his motives, "but Kid's Help Phone holds a very special place in my heart, so they'll be my first initiative." When asked why he chose children's charities rather than others, La Vertu said, "It's clear that the well-being of our world's children has shifted from merely parents and teachers, to society, and it's our responsibility as a society to care for our children...in doing so, we take care of the world."
A mentor for teens and part-time foster parent, La Vertu has a passion for working with children, and his ultimate personal dream to adopt a child is what inspired the novel which he hopes to make into a film, but getting the book "out there" is his first goal. "Like most writers, I'd love to get to Oprah's endorsement, but kids need help today and this needs to happen now," La Vertu says about promoting the book. "If everyone who reads this article, and their friend(s), purchase just one copy of my novel, it will have the same effect as if LoveDare was an Oprah book."
