New Book Proposes Theory on the Origin of Human Behavior
LONDON, Ontario (MMD Newswire) April 15, 2009 -- In Origins, author D. M. Miller proposes that emotions, rather than reason, form the basis for human behavior, and since emotions are the product of one's genetic composition, they must be subject to natural selection.
However, Miller suggests that it is not just the most powerful emotional urges or drives that cause action, stating that all of one's actions are in direct response to emotions that are genetically instilled. Miller's proposition further stipulates that, while the intellect may set interim goals, all of one's ultimate goals are set by emotions, and the sole function of the intellect is to act as a servant to emotions, constantly seeking ways to assist them in their attempt to attain their goals.
Having always considered behavior to be the product of natural selection, Miller believes human behavior can be defined as the sum of all the actions one takes in an attempt to satisfy emotional urges. "It is my intention to enable readers to understand how the human species has attained the behavioral characteristics that presently define it," he says, "By accepting my proposal, many of the human behavioral characteristics can be seen to be the natural consequence of selective forces, and it becomes possible to offer answers to many age-old questions concerning the origin of human behavior."
