Asbestos to be Removed From Site In Youngstown, Ohio
Asbestos will soon be removed from the former Youngstown Building Material and Fuel facility in order to demolish the building. Asbestos must be safely removed form structures before demolition can take place in order to avoid exposure to dangerous asbestos fibers.
The money for the asbestos removal and subsequent demolition of the YBM site, which used to be a concrete company, was approved by the state Controlling Board and comes from the Clean Ohio Revitalization Fund. According to city officials they have been seeking the funds for approximately six years now.
Asbestos exposure has been known to result in the development of a number of dangerous diseases that tend to have a significantly long latency period. Due to the extended latency period it is usually very difficult to find effective treatment options for those diagnosed with asbestos-caused diseases.
Such diseases include mesothelioma, lung cancer, and asbestosis. In many cases these diseases will already be in advanced stages of development by the time they are discovered.
According to officials the entire project is expected to cost approximately $1.1 million. The city of Youngstown, who has owned the property since 2002, is hoping to use the site for light industrial sites in the near future.
