New Hampshire School District Requests Funds for Asbestos Removal
The Seabrook School District located in Seabrook, New Hampshire is requesting funds for an asbestos-removal project to be conducted in the district’s elementary and middle schools. The asbestos-removal project is expected to cost approximately $90,000 and is part of a five year plan.
Many buildings constructed during the early twentieth century contain asbestos as use of the substance was not regulated until the 1970’s. It was at that time that congress created the Occupational Safety and Health Administration. Today those who work around asbestos are required to wear the proper protective gear in order to prevent exposure to asbestos fibers.
Removal of asbestos-containing materials must be conducted by a licensed and trained asbestos-removal professional in order to limit the risk of asbestos exposure. Such exposure is a known cause of a number of often fatal diseases. Such diseases that are caused by asbestos include asbestosis, lung cancers, and mesothelioma. Because of the typically long latency period of these kinds of diseases it is very difficult for doctors to find effective treatment options by the time diagnosis is made.
Deliberation regarding the matter of the funds for the asbestos-removal as well as for other budget issues is set for this Thursday at the library located in the Seabrook Middle School at 7:00 p.m. Those with questions about the funding or the meeting may call the school at (603) 474-9221 or contact the principal by email at jmosca@sau21.org.
