EXERCISE CAN BRING BALANCE IN AN UNBALANCED WORLD
Chandler, AZ (MMD Newswire) March 16, 2009 -- Stress has driven evolutionary changes from the physical environment of the past to the cerebral and social stressors of today. Instead of being hunted and chased by a prehistoric Tyrannosaurus Rex many people are concerned with rising foreclosure rates, wild stock market ride, and increase in layoffs or a decrease in their 401K.
The body responds to the stress with acceleration in heart rate, increase in blood pressure, muscles tightening, an acceleration of instantaneous reflexes, tunnel vision. These spontaneous or intuitive behaviors are often related to combat or escape and may be necessary in some circumstances. The coincidence here is you are most likely spending your day in your office, sitting at your desk, in front of your computer or in your vehicle ... fuming. It is time to let off some steam.

Tammi Jacobs of Results Health and Fitness Center in Chandler, AZ explains, "I think everyone would agree these are challenging times and people are seeking answers to the issues they face in finances, health, career and how to create balance in this unbalanced world." Jacobs continues, "Everything about exercise is good. You simply have to find a variety of activities you enjoy and focus on our most valuable asset: our health."
Studies show people should exercise at least 30 minutes per day at least 5 times per week.
Perry, general manager of a construction company, just finished participating in a Fit Force weight training class explains, "I had a really tough week and had to lay off a bunch of my guys...I felt really bad. My workout helped forget about today's problems, even if temporarily."
Kristin Vickers-Douglas, Ph.D., psychologist at the Mayo Clinic states, "It's not a magic bullet, but increasing physical activity is a positive and active strategy to help manage depression and anxiety."
Jacobs explains, "Some members use the gym as a safe haven. A place where they can get away from the stressors of life, do an activity that is great for their body and mind as well as have a good laugh with some friends they have made at the gym."
A growing volume of research shows that exercise can also improve symptoms of certain medical conditions, including anxiety and depression, improves sleeping patterns as well as providing a great distraction. Susan, a member of Results and a director for a major electronic company explains, "There are days when I can not get here fast enough. I just want to hear the music, feel my heart rate increase and relieve some of the days stress. With the pressures of today I think my workouts are a necessity."
