New Novel Explores the Challenges of Raising an Autistic Child
A Pebble to Polish by Janet Lord Leszl tells the story of a young woman and the child she never expected to have
ABINGDON, MD -- December 2, 2008 -- A Pebble to Polish, a novel by Janet Lord Leszl, parent to an autistic son, seeks to illustrate the challenges and rewards of raising a child diagnosed with the developmental disability.
Idealistic college student Cassandra Delaine, preoccupied with classes and a busy social calendar, is totally unprepared for the drastic changes life has in store for her. A financial windfall opens new and unexpected doors, but tragedy soon follows and Cassandra is left picking up the pieces. Ultimately, she finds herself a single parent, caring for an autistic child. Happiness, fulfillment and emotional wellbeing are seemingly out of reach until Cassandra reaches out to other parents who have made the same difficult journey.

Author Leszl drew on her own experiences as a parent to an autistic child in crafting the novel. “Despite the multitude of difficulties that come in raising children with autism, their unique, worthwhile qualities become apparent when you take the time to know them,” author Leszl explains.
Named a finalist in USA Book News National Best Books 2008 Awards, the novel is designed to share factual information about autism through a fictional narrative. A Pebble to Polish was written for anyone interested in learning about the struggle that parents and loved ones go through in raising an autistic child.
