Ivy League Professor and Administrator Gives His Views on the Comic Side of College Life in New Collection of Essays

The Dog Ate My Budget by Ross A. Webber is an insider’s account of the perils and pleasures of university life

HADDONFIELD, N.J. -- December 3, 2008 -- The collection of essays, The Dog Ate My Budget: Tales about Teaching and Managing in the Ivy Tower by Wharton School Professor Emeritus Ross A. Webber, is a memoir intended to be a humorous look at the top issues facing university communities today.

In academic leader Webber’s essay collection, he takes readers inside the ivy walls of university culture. Each of his short essays cover topics like student life, alumni, money matters and interactions with the world at large. Webber also includes a cast of famous characters, including Jackie Robinson, Imelda Marcos, Elizabeth Taylor and more. University life can be chaos, Webber suggests, and those in academia must learn to cultivate both a great sense of humor and a tolerance for the ambiguity and the craziness of life inside a complex organization.

In these essays, Webber also includes lessons about teaching and managing universities and offers a personal perspective on such issues as the challenges affecting women faculty, drinking on campus and what it is really like to be a brand new assistant professor at an Ivy League college. Meant to be as humorous as it is educational, The Dog Ate My Homework is Webber’s valentine to the modern university. Says Patricia Sweeting, professor at Teachers' College, Columbia University, “I recommend that this book be provided to all professors at the first faculty meeting in September, but especially to new Ph.D.s surveying the unmapped land of academe.”
