New Book Examines the Concept of Race in a Period of Reverse Colonialism

Author Arico Barzev draws from his life experiences to consider the questions surrounding race in The Poetics of Racism

ROHNERT PARK, Calif. -- December 3, 2008 -- The Poetics of Racism by Arico Barzev uses concepts taken from human ethnology, sociobiology, evolutionary anthropology and psychology and sociolinguistics in an attempt to dismiss the structuralism of French anthropologist Claude Levi-Strauss and his spiritual descendents, the postmodernists.

In The Poetics of Racism, Barzev narrates the story of Billy Benson, the son of a wealthy executive in the automobile industry, and a debutante heiress. Aspiring to become a doctor, Billy enters medical school but drops out after his first year to take a trip around the world. While riding the Trans-Siberian Express, Billy meets Rifka, a Baghdad-born Israeli. Billy follows Rifka to the University of California at Berkeley, where they both study anthropology. They marry, have a son and later split up. Despite throwing himself into his anthropological work, Billy sinks into a deep depression as a result of the break up. Ultimately, Billy reunites with Rifka in Israel to start a new life but is drafted into the ‘73 war. At the novel’s end, Billy is asleep while awaiting an ambush in Gaza. Unleashing the figments of his unconscious mind, Billy dreams about his life and the life of the “other.” He dreams of the past, the future and the never to be.

Barzev states that postmodernism has metastasized in ethnic studies, anthropology and sociology departments throughout the world, and that it is incorrectly used as a feature of the study of Western colonialism. Believing that the world is now in a period of reverse colonialism, he thinks it is time to reeducate the postmodernists before they impact another generation.

Written to educate and enlighten, The Poetics of Racism seeks to explore the science that lies beneath the constant love and hate of the “other.”
